Embracing Simplicity: 5 Reasons I Chose to Build a Tiny House

By Mollie Bradford
In recent years, the tiny house movement has captured the imagination of many seeking a simpler, more sustainable lifestyle. As someone who values environmental consciousness, efficient living, and supporting local businesses, I found myself drawn to the idea of building a tiny house because of my desire to live a more mindful way of life.

WHERE IT ALL STARTED: Building my tiny house is a dream that traces back to my childhood, where the seeds of tiny living were sown. I can vividly recall being a wide-eyed child, passionately begging my parents to let me live in my backyard playhouse with my beloved golden retriever, Jack. The idea of living simply in a small, cozy space captivated me even then. Fast forward about 21 years, and that commitment to a childhood dream has become a full-circle reality. I've designed the tiny house life I once yearned for (this time with a few added square feet!) for my five-year-old golden retriever and I to reside. The journey from that childhood plea to the realization of my tiny house dream has been a remarkable one, filled with a deep sense of fulfillment and gratitude for embracing the simplicity and joy of minimalist living.

HOW YOU CAN ENJOY THIS SPACE TOO: This tiny house is not only my cherished home but also a delightful space that opens its doors to serve as the perfect getting-ready suite for the venue's wedding parties. If you're looking for a unique experience, stay tuned for exciting happenings and pop-ups here, as this charming abode embraces a multifunctional spirit.

SUSTAINBILITY & REDUCING CARBON FOOTPRINT: With growing environmental concerns and the urgent need to reduce our carbon footprint, building a tiny house presented an opportunity for me to lead a more sustainable lifestyle. Tiny houses are inherently eco-friendly due to their reduced size, requiring fewer resources during construction and less energy to operate. The widespread deforestation occurring in our cities is a familiar sight, as new neighborhood after neighborhood and apartment complex after apartment complex continue to encroach upon natural landscapes and drives out the wildlife that resides in these places.

Embracing a minimalist lifestyle also encouraged me to be mindful of my consumption habits and significantly reduce waste, further lessening my impact on the planet. Once a New York City-living fashion girl, life on my family's farm, where I also work, is a true blessing that seamlessly merges my love for style and design with a deep connection to nature. Returning to my roots and embracing the serenity of rural living has been a transformative experience. Amidst the vast landscapes and the comforting rhythm of life on the pasture, I've discovered a profound sense of peace and fulfillment. As our family team has grown from just my father and me to include my sister and brother, each bringing their unique talents to the table, the farm has become an even more vibrant and dynamic place. Building my tiny house on this cherished land has deepened my connection to both my family and nature.

LESS SPACE FOR MORE LIFE: In today's fast-paced world, we often find ourselves trapped in a cycle of acquiring more possessions and living in cluttered spaces. While I love to shop, building a tiny house allowed me to break free from this pattern and focus on the experiences that truly matter to me. By downsizing and living with only what I genuinely need and cherish, I have more time and energy to devote to my passions, hobbies, and relationships. The simplicity of tiny house living has given me the chance to fully embrace life, free from the burden of excess possessions and constant tidying, all without compromising the quality of well-tailored design.
SIMPLYFYING RESPONSIBILITES & FOCUS: As life becomes increasingly busy, we often find ourselves overwhelmed with responsibilities and commitments. Building a tiny house has allowed me to rethink what makes me happy by paring down my life to the essentials, simplifying my daily routine and freeing up mental space to focus on what truly matters to me personally. With fewer household chores and maintenance tasks, I have more time to engage in activities that bring me joy, whether it's pursuing a hobby, spending time in nature, or connecting with loved ones. Embracing a minimalist lifestyle has been transformative, helping me prioritize my well-being and happiness.
My decision to build a tiny house was fueled by a desire for sustainability, a simpler and more meaningful life, a commitment to support local businesses, and an embracing my inner child. From reducing my carbon footprint to achieving financial freedom and creative expression, each aspect of tiny house living has enriched my life in profound ways. As the tiny house movement continues to grow, I hope that more individuals will explore this alternative path of living if it's the right fit for them and discover the profound benefits of embracing simplicity. I'm excited to see how living in a tiny impacts my life and others over the next year and what adventures await!
